Cultural lag becomes evident when you examine the concerns around COVID-19 and contact tracing. Contact tracing involves mapping the contacts of someone after they test positive for COVID-19. Smartphone technology has fostered a variety of apps designed to make it easier to trace whom someone has met or been in contact with while infected with the virus. Although this technology exists and is used in many parts of the world, privacy concerns have hampered its rollout in the United States (Richtel 2020). Moral and ethical questions abound, as do concerns about the lack of laws to govern its usage.
