In the worldwide fight against the Coronavirus, Peru initially created a lockdown plan based on gender. Men could leave their home to run errands on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while women could do so on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Citizen concern about the plan revolved around the fact that it did not consider family patterns of Peruvian society, where women do most of the shopping for the family and were unable to do so many days of the week. Additionally, the plan did not consider transgender Peruvians, whose gender identity may differ from society’s gender norms. The backlash towards the plan was so great that it was scraped a mere 8 days after it was initiated (Lopez 2020).
