Connecting Sociology and YOU!

The Pandemic and YOU

What role does socialization play in a moral panic over COVID-19? How does media create, or reduce, moral panic? Do you usually experience the same fear that is shared during the moral panic, or do you feel you react differently to societal concerns?

Moral Panic

The COVID-19 pandemic constituted more of a moral panic than the 2014 Ebola scare. This was due to how much easier Coronavirus spreads than Ebola. From 2014-2016, 11,300 people died of Ebola (World Vision 2020). Between January 2020 and January 2021, nearly 2 million people around the world died of COVID-19, including over 360,000 in the United States (Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Research Center 2021).
