Connecting Sociology and YOU!

The Pandemic and YOU

Would you consider wearing a mask in public to be a norm in American culture prior to the pandemic? Would you consider wearing a mask in public to be a norm in American culture during the pandemic? What other cultural norms have changed in response to the pandemic? Do you think these norms will change after the pandemic, or will these norms become a permanent part of our culture?

Norms

There are expectations and guidelines for behavior even during a pandemic. Whether it be folkways about elbow bumping instead of shaking hands or political leaders like the UK’s Boris Johnson using laws to put a country into strict lockdown, a variety of norms initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic have changed how we behave towards one another. (Jones 2021; Kaplan 2020; McCarthy 2020).
