The pandemic gives us an opportunity to consider the differences between objective conditions and subjective concerns. Objectively, the scope of the pandemic can be scientifically measured. The numbers of ill and dead both in the U.S. and around the world is an indisputable fact. On the other hand, people’s feelings about the pandemic are not as concrete. Some felt the need to wear a mask and social distance, while others were less alarmed and felt neither action was necessary. Sociology is an effective tool to help analyze the problem, distinguish between objective conditions and subjective concerns, and work towards viable solutions.
