Political participation is not only about voting. It is also about the process leading up to the election, including political party conventions. The COVID-19 pandemic hit during an election year in the United States, forcing traditional face-to-face political participation to be examined through the lens of safety recommendations from health professionals. Citing grave concerns about public health and the spread of COVID-19, in-person state and national conventions were canceled or conducted virtually (Associated Press 2020; Bykowicz 2020; Stracqualursi 2020).
