During the COVID-19 pandemic, the stark difference between the lives of the bourgeois “haves” and proletariat “have nots” could be seen by looking at who had access to testing. At the start of the pandemic in the United States, COVID tests for the masses were scarce. Yet, famous, rich, and powerful athletes, celebrities, and politicians were able to get tested (Twohey 2020). Even as the number of COVID-19 cases skyrocketed in June 2020, many people had to wait in their cars for up to 13 hours to get a test (Frank 2020). The differences between those who would test early and quickly and those who couldn’t are symptomatic of the different life experiences of those in a society who have access to wealth and those who do not.
The Pandemic and YOU
Have you been tested for COVID-19? How do you think your access to available testing compares to celebrities’ or politicians’ access to testing? Why is there a difference in testing access for the proletariat compared to the bourgeois?
