In the realm of religion, the response to COVID-19 ranged from some churches holding televised or virtual services to others offering drive-thru squirt gun blessings (Snyder 2020). At the close of 2020, it was revealed that Joel Osteen’s 50,000-member Lakewood Church in Houston, TX received over $4 million in PPP money (Dowen 2020). Pastors in several states died of COVID-19 after refusing to follow lockdown and social distancing orders. Regardless of the Center for Disease Control guidelines, most states in the U.S. have made exemptions in the rules for houses of religious worship (Villa 2020).
