The Pandemic and YOU

Did you participate in the Black Lives Matter movement during the pandemic? Why or why not? Do you think social movements can increase the spread of COVID-19? Do you think online social movement participation can effectively achieve established goals compared to in-person participation?

Social Movements

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement gained steam during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the senseless killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis, Minnesota, police officer. As part of the BLM movement, there were protest marches and demonstrations in the United States and around the world. While initially there was fear that this would lead to spikes in the Coronavirus infection rate, protesters wearing masks, congregating outside with fresh air circulation, and non-protesters distancing themselves from the area kept the infection rate down (Asmelash 2020; Berger 2020).
