The Pandemic and YOU

Why do you think the United States does not have socialized medicine? How are medical expenses paid for in socialized medicine? How does the cost of healthcare perpetuate inequality?

Socialized Medicine and Cost of Healthcare

The cost of treating a patient hospitalized with COVID-19 varies tremendously around the world. The average cost for Americans is around $73,000 without insurance and $38,221 with in-network insurance (Fair Health 2020). By comparison, the cost of Coronavirus hospitalization to an uninsured person in Italy is zero (Kottasova 2020). The difference is that Italy, like many other nations, has socialized medicine, a system in which medical and hospital care is funded for all citizens by the government.
