The looking-glass self is an ongoing process that is about our self-perception and self-esteem. Case in point, a mother in Florida, whose family was socially distancing due to COVID-19, accidentally walked naked past her daughter’s computer while the first grader was in a Zoom session with her classmates (Deabler 2020). The mother was mortified. Her reaction can be explained with the looking-glass self. After the incident, the woman imagined how she appeared to others. Next, she imagined the judgment of not only her daughter’s classmates but also the teacher and other parents. Finally, she developed a self-concept (mortification) based not only on her imagination of how she appeared but also on her perceived judgment of others.
