During the COVID-19 pandemic, prisoners were not immune to the virus. As the infection rate amongst inmates and staff skyrocketed, questions emerged about how to treat people in these environments. Some states decided to release inmates early (Hamilton 2020). Others decided to keep inmates locked in their cells, effectively creating mass social distancing through solitary confinement (Shapiro 2020). Still, others chose to ignore the problem and not test the population for fear of the numbers of sick that might be found in their midst (Williams 2020).
