During the first wave of COVID-19 in New York City, many upper-class residents decided to flee the city in favor of wealthy enclaves like the Hamptons. Full-time middle and lower-class year-round Hampton residents resisted the influx of wealthy out-of-towners. The concern was that the upper-class out-of-towners would bring the pandemic to their community and use up the limited resources available to local Hampton residents (Callahan 2020).
