Connecting Sociology and YOU!

The Pandemic and YOU

Have you noticed a difference in how the upper class and lower class respond to COVID-19? How does wealth impact individuals’ access to certain resources and behaviors that can lead to a safer and healthier lifestyle? Do you think more can be done to give the lower class access to more resources to stay healthy throughout the pandemic?

Upper Class

During the first wave of COVID-19 in New York City, many upper-class residents decided to flee the city in favor of wealthy enclaves like the Hamptons. Full-time middle and lower-class year-round Hampton residents resisted the influx of wealthy out-of-towners. The concern was that the upper-class out-of-towners would bring the pandemic to their community and use up the limited resources available to local Hampton residents (Callahan 2020).
