In general, health research focuses on understanding human health, health behavior, and health systems. Qualitative research focuses on the “what,” “why,” and “how” of these areas rather than the “how many” or “how much,” which is quantitative research. There is an academic journal that focuses entirely on this type of research. Qualitative Health Research (QHR) is “a peer-reviewed monthly journal that provides an international, interdisciplinary forum to enhance health care and further the development and understanding of qualitative research in health-care settings.” An example of an article is “Concussions and Risks Within Contexts of Play.” This study examined the relationship between college students’ understanding of concussions and their willingness to continue playing despite the possibility of sustaining multiple head injuries. The researchers used participant observation and structured interviews and found that students were willing to risk further injuries not because they were uniform about the risks but due to their desire to play sports being more important than the assessment of risk. Another research example is Narrativizing Nursing Students’ Experiences With Medical Errors During Clinicals. This qualitative study explores how nursing students and nurses explain their mistakes and how they respond to mistakes. This study involved qualitative interviews with 68 nursing students, and once the interviews were transcribed, it resulted in 1,261 single-spaced pages of data. Some students observed experienced nurses “saving the day” by confronting other professionals who were making mistakes; some nursing students learned not to report mistakes, even serious ones; and others learned that even experienced nurses make mistakes and it was the responsibility of the nursing students to confront the mistakes. This is an example of how you might be involved in a qualitative research project even as a nursing student.
