Diagnosis

  1. What is your opinion of the black physician’s statement about being more aggressive and using different standards than with the general white population?
  2. What is your opinion of some white physicians indicating there is no reason to pay attention to a person’s race in determining a treatment plan and by doing so it borders on racial stereotyping?
  3. Do you think racial colorblindness is a good practice in your healthcare setting?

Racial Colorblindness

As a medical professional, there are different ways of addressing race. In a study utilizing focus groups consisting of physicians, the perspectives about how to address race differed significantly. Black physicians were far more likely to comment that a patient’s race is a relevant factor in determining the best treatment plan. A race-based factor might be the population-based probabilities of disease or whether a patient can afford prescribed medications. A black physician stated, “I think being an African American is a risk factor in and of itself. And, I think that when you see an African American then you need to often be more aggressive than you would, and use different standards than you would for the general white population.” White physicians were more likely to indicate there is no reason to pay attention to a person’s race in determining a treatment plan, and by doing so it borders on racial stereotyping. This approach de-emphasizes that racial realities exist that are medically relevant. By definition, the physician is ignoring or overlooking racial differences during the medical examination and opting for one-size fits all approach. This could stem from the physician erring on the side of not wanting to stereotype specific races or being overly aware of personal biases. On the other side of the issue, colorblindness may not be the best medical practice as race is socially constructed with cultural, physical, psychological, and economic characteristics intertwined. Each of these characteristics can play an important role in understanding the patient and providing the best care possible.
