  3. As a healthcare practitioner, are you able to address the social inequalities within the larger society? If so, how?

Social Inequality

An analysis of the U.S. healthcare system concludes that there are numerous inequalities based on sex, gender, income, race, and ethnicity. Regarding sex, females live longer than men but have worse health than males. This is partly due to their subordinate role in society which creates stress, discrimination, and other difficulties that impair their health. LBGTQ+ individuals experience more stress due to the general lack of inclusion and acceptance by the larger society. Pervasive discrimination exists that negatively impacts all aspects of their lives, including health. Income is a predictor of health and longevity. Low SES individuals have more stress and lack resources to access healthcare services available to wealthier individuals. The higher levels of stress for low-income individuals help to explain why they experience poor health. Health disparities based on race and ethnicity are numerous. Minorities face significant disparities in access to and utilization of healthcare. Blacks, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives fare worse than Whites on the majority of examined measures of health status and outcomes. Social determinants play a large role in one’s health. A child of color born in poverty will likely have limited opportunities in education and employment, and live in a disadvantaged neighborhood. From the beginning, the child’s health is impacted by the family’s socioeconomic status and will likely persist for her lifetime, since social mobility is not a common occurrence in the U.S. There is also the structural issue that the U.S. does not provide healthcare for all citizens, which may also negatively impact her at some point in her life.
