Connecting Sociology and YOU!

Diagnosis

  1. Does it surprise you that physicians do not have the same amount of status in other countries?
  2.
  3. Badges serve the purpose of differentiating levels of status in the workplace? Do you see healthcare professionals wearing their badges in public settings? Why might an individual wear their badge at a restaurant?
  4.
  5. How important is social status to you in relation to your career?

Social Status

In a hospital setting there is a hierarchy of employees based on social status, or one’s position or rank within the organization. The status of employees is based on achieved status due to their educational attainment and becoming certified as a health professional. This allows for a structured means of ranking individuals based on their degrees and credentials. There are LPN/LVN, RN, and APN nurses and DO and MD physicians. All employees have a badge with their name and credentials, which easily identifies their position and rank within the hierarchical structure. Physicians are afforded the most social status due to their specialized skill set. It just seems logical and reasonable that physicians should have high social status in the U.S., but this concept is not shared around the world. In many places in China, physicians earn an average of $406 per month, which is only $3.00 more than the average of $403 per month for hotel receptionists in China. In Cuba, physicians earn $30-50 per month, partly due to having the most physicians per capita. In both of these countries, physicians are not afforded nearly the same amount of social status as physicians in the U.S. Scientists and doctors topped the list of the most prestigious professions according to surveys of Americans in 2021, while nurses were tenth on the list.
