Chapter 1: Introduction – Understanding Sociology

Notes: social institutions- structures in society providing  the framework for governing the behavior of individuals in a community or society. How you grew up,culture and social institutions influences your daily activites and decision. 

social forces shape individuals and societies. There are 5 MODULES.

Sociological perspective- the process of understanding and explaining how someone and groups interact with society.

social structure- patterns that form the society as a whole

social problems- societal conditions that harm segments of society.

sociological imagination- see details of out own lives in the context of larger social structures as opposed to merely personal choices or personal troubles.

social change- the forces that change societys organization and social. 

Auguste Comte- term POSITIVISM- authentic and valid empirical pursuit. he believe he could provide solutions to social problems such as  crime, poverity

France to the U.S. in the 19th century- describe and explain components of society. 3 basic socoal theories emerged. CONFLICT, FUNCTIONALIST AND SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM.

Sociological theory- a set of interrelated ides that provide a systematic understanding of the social world. People have different views

The vine yard and the village views represent MACRO SOCIOLOGY- a level of analysis focusing on social systems and populations on a large scale. 

the meadow is an example of MICRO SOCIOOLOGY- a level of analysis focusing on individuals and small groups within the larger social system

PROLETARIAT- POOR BOURGEOISEIE- RICH the small minority who were the wealthy class

CONFLICT THEORY- a sociological view emphasizing the role of political and economic power and oppression as  

EMILE DURKINHEIM- VIEW OF THE VILLAGE- sees how the villager live in harmony and how each part of the village serves a function. 

Functionalist theory- macro view of how parts of society serve to maintain stability. 

EDUCATIONS, GOVERNMENT, AND FAMILIES ARE PART OF SOCIETY. 

3 parts: MANIFEST FUNCTIONS-intentional and formally sanctioned functions of social institutions and society. Students reading, math, and science. LATENT FUNCTIONS- unintentional and informally santioned fucntctions of social institutions and society. Learning social skills, finding romantic partners, and even negative fnctions such as bullying and learning how to cheat on exams. 

DYSFUNCTIONS- negative consequences within society. Ballooning tuition costs and massive student debt are dysfunctions of higher educations. 

GEORGE HERBERT MEAD- meadow and developed the theory SOCIALIZED SELF- the self cannot develop apart form society, you are who you are due to your social interactions and environment. His theory is called SYMBOLIC INTERACTION- a micto view of how society is the product of interactions between people, which occur via symbols that have distinct meanings. 

CONFLICT AND FUNCTIONALIST- macro level of analysis 

CONFLICT THEORIES- focus on exploitation in society 

FUNCTIONALIST- concerned more about the  parts of society and how each functions 

SYMBOLIC interaction analyze individual interactions to better understadn society as a whole
