You have heard that two topics should not be brought up at a dinner party — politics and religion. There is truth to this saying, as both topics can quickly create strife and divisions in a room. This chapter addresses religion, and once again, sociologists approach this topic from a value-neutral position. Sociologists do not assume there are one or more “true” religions and the others are false or that some religions have strange beliefs and practices.
In contrast, sociologists attempt to understand how religions have been socially constructed and how they impact society’s beliefs, values, and norms. You will also learn how secularization affects society and how to predict who is the most “religious.”
Are you ready to learn about the happiness formula? It is not as easy as 1 + 1 = 2, but there is a formula based on years of scientific research on happiness. You will also learn about the relationship between social media use and unhappiness and how gratitude plays a big role in our happiness.
Just a reminder – the information in the videos is not a replacement for the therapeutic relationship in psychotherapy or a substitute for professional advice from a medical doctor, psychiatrist, or counselor. If needed, we encourage you to seek professional help at your mental health clinic at your college or university.
