This chapter may be the most eye-opening of all 15 chapters as it relates to income and wealth in the U.S. It is packed full of statistics that are jarring and, at times, discouraging. In the U.S., the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer, meaning the wealth gap is widening. Many of the statistics you will read about are the result of research conducted by sociologists hoping that the findings will be used to develop new public policies to make a better society.
We hope you are enjoying the short videos in each chapter. The videos reinforce a scientific technique or the content from the chapters, and we will use repetition to reinforce the information.
In this chapter, you will learn about the power of self-motivation and the concept of conscientiousness, which has been studied for over 35 years and is one of the most significant and consistent predictors of academic performance.
In the previous chapter, you learned about the technique of chunking, which is similar to interleaving. We encourage you to continue using the five techniques of the science of learning and combine them with the five concepts related to the science of achievement. It is a powerful combination!
