Hi, we are excited to introduce you to Chapter 3 because it discusses one of our favorite topics – culture! In this chapter, you will begin to see why sociology is so applicable to your life. You will learn about how beliefs, values, norms, language, and symbols characterize the culture around you. By the end of the chapter, you will better understand how culture impacts you and how to respond when you encounter other cultures that seem strange.

I (SYlvia) wish I had read this chapter before my vacation to Thailand. I was served tadpoles coated with a generous serving of fermented fish sauce. Not something you would find in the small Texas town where I grew up. My reaction would have been much different if I understood the concept of ethnocentrism. Someday, I plan to visit Scotland and try haggis (more about this in the chapter). Have fun with this chapter, and make it personal!

So far, we have introduced you to two of the five recommended techniques of the science of learning: retrieval practice and elaboration. Next, we will introduce you to spaced retrieval, which is basically spreading out lessons and retrieval opportunities over time to avoid cramming. You don’t want to be cramming the night before a SociologicalYOU exam!

Using these learning techniques doesn’t mean you are guaranteed an “A” in every course. Like most things in life, it is going to take time, work, and practice. Remember, the only place where “success” comes before “work” is in the dictionary! Science points us to the tools needed to succeed, but we must still choose to use those tools.

Keep using retrieval practice and elaboration, and add spaced retrieval to your tool kit. You’ve got this.
