Chapter 1: Introduction – Understanding Sociology

Notes:

sociological theorya set of interrelated ideas that provide a systematic understanding of the social world (key is remembering the three men who look out the window they all focus on different things)

vineyard and village are macro sociology a level of analysis focusing on social systems and populations on a large scale

the couple in the meadow is micro sociology  a level of analysis focusing on individuals and small groups within the larger social system

 

Marx vineyard his view is conflict theory a sociological perspective emphasizing the role of political and economic power and oppression as contributing to the existing social order

Durkheim village bakery his view is functionalist theory a macro view of how the parts of society serve to maintain stability manifest functionsintentional and formally sanctioned functions of social institutions and society. Within education, the manifest function is to teach students reading, math, and science. Latent functionsunintentional and informally sanctioned functions of social institutions and society, that occur in education include learning social skills, finding romantic partners, and even negative functions, such as bullying and learning how to cheat on exams.dysfunctionthe undesirable disruptions of social patterns resulting in negative consequences within society

Mead couple in the meadow his view is the socialized self  which states that the self cannot develop apart from society you are who you are due to your social interactions and environment His theory is referred to as symbolic interactiona micro view of how society is the product of interactions between people, which occur via symbols that have distinct meanings

Weber’s perspective has components of symbolic interaction and is more akin to functionalism than conflict theory. 

in addition there are feminist, post modern, and queer theories.  

feminist theorya view on anti-oppression, gender relations, and gender inequality, evolved from the conflict theory

Harriet Martineau english first female sociologist went to us for two years published society in America focused on value systems and gender racial and class tensions with the goal of helping subordinate groups 

“When one studies a society, one must focus on all its aspects, including key political, religious, and social institutions.”

Jane Addams applied sociologist no formal degree founded hull house for immigrants in Chicago because the social structures in Chicago were not supportive of their needs hull house had lots of social services like education classes a library gym and clubs but closed due to money issues she was the first American woman to win a Nobel peace prize 

W. E. B. Du Bois first African American to earn a phd from Harvard co founded NAACP he challenged the social structures that perpetuated racism and discrimination in workplaces, military, and education encouraged top 10 precent of black men to pursue higher education become writers and get involved with social change he was a big influence on the civil rights movement 

Robert Merton

one of americas most influential social scientists

instrumental in formalizing the functionalist  theory in his writings \\\”social theory and social structure\\\” 

identifies bureaucracies as social structures
