Chapter 3: Culture

3.1

there are three types of culture

Material: Physical identifieres

-kiminos, sushi, chopsticks

Non-material: non-physical things and symbols

-removing shoes before entering, politeness, shaming

Ideal: Values

Real: Observing raw behavior

3.2

Types of cultural aspects: language, symbols, food, beliefs, values, norms

Sapir-Whorf Theory: people view society through communication

Technological determinism: societys technology drives society

sustainable development: consider and adjust how we live today so we don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t negatively impact the future generations resources

Beliefs: ideas that are held in society to be true

Values: ideas on what is desirable and undesirable in society

Norms: guidelines that are established for different social situations

Folkways: informal norms that are common in everyday behavior. Not strictly enforced

Mores: informal normas based on morals and ethical factors

Laws: formal legal rules

taboos: formal norms that will be punished

social sanctions: punishments or rewards based on norms

Cultural Transmission: culture is passed by generation to generation

dominant ideology: beliefs and interests of the majority

Cultural imperialism: influence and power impacts one

Subcultures: groups with distinct cultural characteristics by a minority of people in society. Ex: Amish People (distinctive group in christian based)

Countercultures: subculture that are in opposition of majority members in society. Ex: KKK who believed white people were superior.

Functionalist Theory: Everything in society serves a function. Pieces work together to make one 

Conflict Theory: Tension and struggles effects on groups

Symbolic Interactionism: symbols play something in our everyday\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s lives.

ethnocentrism: judging another culture by your own standards or values

cultural relativism: understanding another culture through ones standards

cultural diffusion: spread of norms, avalues, knowledge, symbols, and material components from one society to another. 

cultural lag: technological development and progress separates current norms, knowledge symbols etc. Basically changes it somewhat

cultural leveling: cultures become similar due to factors like globalization or media. 

popular culture: cultural characteristics adopted or idolized

high culture: cultural characteristics that are for the more dominant members of society
