Chapter 4: Socialization

4.1

socialization: the process by which individuals learn the appropriate attitudes and behaviors within a culture
self: individuals nature and identity resulting from reflections 

I: unsocialized self made up of personal desires and needs

me: social self, made up of the internalized attitudes of others

-mead viewed the socialized self as phases: preparatory, play, and game

preparatory: imitation of others

play: pretending to be others

game: taking the role of multiple people at once

Mead labeled this as generalized other: process of internalizing societal norms and expectations

looking-glass self: process of imagining the reaction of others toward oneself

three phases of looking glass self

1. imagine how you appear to others

2. imagine the judgement of you appearance by others

3. determine how the process influences your self by combining how you imagine you appear to others and their judgements to your appearance. 

mead and cooley said that the socialized self is made by day-to-day interactions

4.2

agents of socialization: individuals, groups and institutions that influence the attitudes and behaviors of members

– agents communicate standardized messages of what is acceptable in every day lives

social learning theory: the process of learning from one another ina social context as a result of observation and imitation. By Albert Bandura

peer groups: soc ial groups consisting of memebers with similar interests, rank, and age

high-status youth: viewed as popular among peers

digital natives: individuals born after the widespread of technology

digital immigrants: individuals born before the widespread of technology

4.3

feral children: children isolated and neglected as they are raised without socialization

– its true that the social class of the parents play a key role in the socialization of children

total institution: isolated group with strict rules, goal is to control every aspect of members lives

resocialization: identity transformation in which social norms and roles are altered or replaced

degradation ceremony: an event used to break fown people, making them more accepting of a total institution. 

anticipatory socialization: process of learning different behaviors in effort to get membership in a group

rite of passage: ceremony to mark a change in age or social status

dramaturgy: theory that we are all actors on the stage of life.

two areas in this

front stage: persons public life that they reveal in the world

backstage: a persons private life that they choose not to reveal

impression maangement: an effort to control the impression others have made of us.

distance zones: amount of space we are socialized to feel comfortable having between ourselves and others

majority of teens feel self-conconcious and purposely make it seem like their life is perfect on social media 

life course perspective: a series of social changes that a person experiences over the course of their lifetime
